The Elephant Nose is one of the most interesting and unique aquarium species.
Aptly named and unmistakable because of its frontal "nose" which looks like an elephant?s trunk, it is a Mormyrid and in the same family as the baby whale. Many claim that is is the most intelligent of the aquarium fishes.
The "nose" is really a highly sensitive electric organ that the Elephant nose is able to use to find worms and other food in muddy water (comes very handy in the murky reed water of the Nile where they live). Not only does it use electric pulses to locate objects, but it also has a weak electric defense mechanism with which it sometimes chases other fish away with.
They will also reportedly play with conductive objects such as a small piece of tinfoil.
The Elephant Nose are happier when in a group of their own kind, and with plenty of hiding places (caves, PVC pipes, driftwood etc). They are very peaceful fish that can be kept in a community tank and very interesting to observe.
They love live foods such as blackworms and are omnivorous fish that can learn to take in a variety of foods.
